The No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Queens University of Charlotte Royals in stellar fashion, with a final score of 21-1. The victory on April 1st extended UGA’s win streak to nine games, as the team homered five times.
On the mound, UGA entrusted their pitching to seven arms, as they allowed only one earned run collectively. Junior Zach Harris earned his second win of the season as Georgia’s starting pitcher.
Slate Alford and Robbie Burnett, who have been everyday starters for the Bulldogs, had multiple home runs in the game. Their combined offense gave UGA nine runs on Tuesday.
“We have so many good players and good things have been happening, but we're going to keep our heads down’,” said Alford, when asked about UGA’s offense. “Just keep working and keep moving.”
The Georgia third baseman is batting .349 on the year and is one of the team leaders in scoring, earning 40 RBIs so far this season.
“I thought we got off a couple good swings there in the first, and in innings two and three, that we just missed,” said Georgia head coach Wes Johnson. “Our game's a game of eyelashes sometimes, so I thought it was our approach.”
In two years as the skipper for Georgia baseball, Johnson has a record of 72-19. The Bulldogs have another SEC test on the road this weekend, travelling to Austin to take on the No. 5 Texas Longhorns.
“We're not thinking about Texas, Alabama, or whoever it is. It's the game today. We were preparing for Queens University of Charlotte and we were ready for that game,” said Georgia outfielder Devin Obee.
Obee, who hit a grand slam in the 5th inning, has been a major addition in the lineup for UGA. The Duke transfer has started in 25 games for the Bulldogs and been a solid defender at centerfield.
“We just have to go play baseball and play our game if we can. We'll be in every game we play,” said Johnson, when thinking about the upcoming series at Texas.
The first game of the three game series against the Longhorns is on Friday, April 4th. The first pitch is at 7:30pm and will be broadcasted on the SEC Network+.
