The No. 10 Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Texas A&M Aggies last night in the first game of a three-game series in Athens, Georgia. UGA had a standout inning in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs, which proved to be too much for Texas A&M to overcome. The final score was 10-6.
It was a rough night on the mound for Georgia starting pitcher Charlie Goldstein, who was pulled in the first inning after giving up two walks and two hits, including a three-run homerun.
Ole Miss transfer pitcher J.T. Quinn came in to stop the damage and had his best outing of the season for the Bulldogs. Quinn’s night ended with seven strikeouts and one earned run in 3.2 innings pitched.
“I just told (the team) right there to come out and play with confidence and stay hungry,” said head coach Wes Johnson. “I thought J.T. Quinn was lights out and settled us down. We played a relatively clean game, but we can still play cleaner, and we played clean enough off the offense too."
Georgia’s offense was fueled by three homers courtesy of Nolan McCarthy, Daniel Jackson and Robbie Burnett, who earned his 20th blast of the season. Bulldogs second baseman Ryan Black also had a solid outing, with a pair of hits and an RBI.
“We don't chase, don't expand the strike zone, and we stay disciplined and lock in and play baseball," said Johnson, when asked about their comeback from the first inning.
Junior right-hander Zach Harris closed out the evening for Georgia on the mound, tallying five strikeouts and no earned runs in 1.2 innings of work.
The Bulldogs are looking to win the series tonight against the Aggies in game 2 of the series. First pitch is slated for 6:02 p.m at Foley Field. Fans can tune in to watch the game on SEC Network+.
